Have you ever experienced the feeling that the seat on your chair is either too deep or too shallow, causing discomfort while you sit? Are you aware that an office chair equipped with seat depth adjustment can make a significant difference to your comfort and overall wellbeing?
A proper seat depth not only enhances comfort, but also provides support to your back and legs while helping you maintain a healthy posture. It contributes to better blood circulation and reduces the likelihood of experiencing discomfort or pain during extended periods of sitting.
Today, I'm excited to walk you through how to achieve the perfect seat depth adjustment.
Why is Proper Seat Depth Important?
Proper seat depth is crucial for maintaining good posture and preventing discomfort.
- If the seat is too deep, it can put pressure on the back of your knees and restrict circulation.
- If it’s too shallow, it can cause inadequate thigh support, leading to fatigue and discomfort.
Benefits of Proper Office Chair Seat Depth Adjustment
Proper seat depth adjustment helps maintain good posture, enhances comfort and reduces the risk of developing musculoskeletal issues. It supports better circulation, minimises pressure points, and helps prevent fatigue during long sitting periods. The benefits of ergonomic furniture on both physical and mental wellbeing
If a number of people will be using the same office chair throughout the day, a chair with a seat slider allows each person to change the seat depth to suit their leg length, thereby maintaining a correct ergonomic seated posture.
Types of Office Chair Seat Depth Adjustment Mechanisms
Before we adjust the seat depth, it’s important to understand the different mechanisms:
a. Sliding Seat:
Many ergonomic chairs have a sliding seat, or seat slider that allows you to adjust the seat depth forward or backward. These office chairs have a seat slider.
b. Adjustable Backrest:
On some office chairs like the ErgoBack, the horizontal backrest adjustment is quite extreme which allows you to achieve the desired seat depth.
Step-by-Step Guide for Office Chair Seat Depth Adjustment
Locate the Seat Depth Adjustment Mechanism
Find the lever or button that adjusts the seat depth.
Sit in Your Chair
Sit with your feet flat on the floor and your back against the backrest. This position will help you find the most comfortable seat depth.
Adjust the Seat Depth
- For Sliding Seat: Pull the lever or press the button to unlock the seat pan, then slide it forward or backward to find the optimal position. Release the lever or button to lock it in place.
- For Adjustable Backrest: Move the backrest horizontally forward or backward until you find a comfortable position where your back is fully supported and there is a small gap between the seat edge and the back of your knees.
Check for Proper Fit
Ensure that your back is fully supported by the backrest and there is a 2-3 finger gap (about 5cm) between the front edge of the seat and the back of your knees. Your feet should be flat on the floor.
Fine-Tune as Needed
You may need to make minor adjustments over the next few days to find the perfect seat depth. Don’t hesitate to tweak the settings until it feels just right.
